Valentina dreams of being a trapeze artist but thinks she will never make it because she has Down’s syndrome. Her grandmother – who teaches her how to play chess and many many songs – encourages her not to give up: If caterpillars can become butterflies, nothing is impossible. We must never lose the will to learn; look at me, I am still committed to being a conductor in an orchestra one day!

But Valentina is not that convinced. She thinks that a caterpillar is too disgusting to become a butterfly… What will this metamorphosis her grandmother talks about be like? When she decides to ask her, Mum and Dad give her some startling news: Granny has gone on a trip. On a trip? Without saying goodbye?
